The Old
Stables holiday cottage is on the High Street in Lyndhurst
village, gateway to the New Forest. The drive runs down hill and away from the
High Street behind full height gates, offering you
a little seclusion in addition to the convenience
of pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and local shops being
on your doorstep!
You are in the heart of the New Forest at the Old
Stables. Walk in any direction out of Lyndhurst and
you're sure to come across scenery and landscapes
unchanged for hundreds of years.
Full of character, our conversion
gives you all the convenience of a modern building,
with all the charm of a Victorian Stable
Block in the Forest.
Walking along the driveway from
the entrance opposite St
Michaels Church, The Old Stables runs on
down the hill and away from the High Street. It is
built with soft red
brick and the roof has been re-tiled using hand
made clay peg tiles. The stable setts which formed
the area of hard-standing outside the original stable
block have been incorporated in the renovation as
a pedestrian pathway
running along the edge of the building.
The split level lounge
area with large open fire and exposed beams has seating, stereo and tv for guests.
Measuring a huge 38ft x 15.5ft this room can take
28 guests. Up the four full-width
steps to the top end there is access to the dining
room and kitchen. The fireplace is at this end and
is especially in winter months.
The bottom end of the lounge offers
access to the lower end bath and shower rooms and
bedrooms.
In the middle of the lounge is the
original stable door, now refurbished, offering access
outside. There are six sofas in total in the lounge,
along with other seating (indluding chairs and a church
pew!) to accommodate guests.
The Lounge area has windows and
skylights to allow light in. The windows around the
upper level door and the door itself are also original
and refurbished. Reclaimed floorboards have been used
for the entire room.

Walking through the
front
door
of this large holiday cottage in the forest, we enter
the large open plan dining/kitchen area and there
are places for up to 28 guests (extra table is set
up for bookings over 20).
This large dining and kitchen area is approximately
nine and a half metres by over 5 metres - a very big
communal area which is ideal for one or two families
or large groups to dine together.
Walking through the kitchen area on the left, we
have the Utilitly
room, which contains another sink, another fridge/freezer
and the washing machine. Through the Utility is the
top end downstairs Shower
Room, with w.c., hand basin and shower. The downstairs
bedroom (bedroom
5) was a separate stable and now has an interesting
"split level" ceiling. It can be accessed through
the Utility or using its own stable door which leads
directly out to the front. This is a double room with
a 4' 6" bed.

Walking across to the kitchen area we
have stainless steel worktops and sink, with cupboards
under for storage of crockery and cooking utensils
etc. Both electric and gas cookers, large fridge,
microwave, dishwasher, kettle, toaster, all the usual
appliances are here, along with the washing machine
and an extra fridge freezer in the utility room. Two
large floor standing cupboards and two glass wall
cupboards provide extra storage space.
The exterior doors and frames have been
given a new lease of life and provide three entrances
to the cottage - one of which leads into this kitchen/dining
area. The interior
doors are all refurbished doors from the local
New Forest area and each has a story to tell. There
are two staircases at the rear which lead to the top
end first floor bedrooms and bathrooms.
Access to the first
floor of our holiday cottage in the New Forest is
via the staircase on the left of the dining area,
which leads up to the landing for bedrooms three and
four. The staircases feature cast
iron railings which have been salvaged from the
original stable block. The first floor has high, vaulted
ceilings throughout, featuring original
round windows and conservation velux skylights
giving an airy feel to the bedrooms and landings.
Bedroom
4 is a comfortable double room, with windows front
and rear. Both single beds are 3'. Bedroom
3 has a 4' 6" double bed. Also leading off the
landing is the bathroom
for these two bedrooms, featuring bath
with shower over, hand basin and w.c.
The staircase
on the right of the living area leads up to the landing
for bedrooms one and two. Bedroom
2 is a large double (4' 6") plus single (3') room
with an interesting twist - the original hayloft
entrance is part of this room, giving you an insight
into the working history of this building. This is
where feed would have been winched up by the stable
lad (not included!) in years gone by. You also have
a super view of the church
tower from here.
Bedroom
1 is a comfortable triple with three 3' beds.
Also leading off the landing is the bathroom for these
two bedrooms, again featuring bath with shower over,
hand basin and w.c.

Towards the lower end of the holiday
cottage, we go through the door leading from the
lounge. The hallway here leads to the fourth and

enclosure with folding/sliding door and shower mixer,
wall-hung basin and wall-hung wc. Reclaimed floorboards
have been used in both the shower room and bathroom.
The bathroom (no5) has a bath with
mixer tap, quadrant shower enclosure with mixer,
bath and wall-hung basin and wc.

Past
the bath/shower rooms 4 and 5, we come to a short
flight of steps leading up to the 'slumber party'
room. This dormitory-style room is a very generous
19' x 19' and swallows 8 single beds with ease! Since the photographs to the right were taken we have added a central row of wardrobes which improve guest storage and provide some privacy.
The room feels all the more spacious
for having a high, vaulted ceiling and juliet balcony
which opens up the bottom end.
Each bed has its own bedside table
and light. Being adjacent to bath/shower rooms 4 and
5 makes for easy use of this space by 8 guests.
There are three more bedrooms, each of which has a double bed, and the largest of these three rooms also has two single beds - bringing the total number that the cottage can sleep to 28.
Parking is at the bottom and top ends of this New Forest cottage, rather than along the front of
the property - the school next door has joint right
of access over this land. Please park vehicles in
line with the garage doors in the picture, allowing
access to the school gate (out of picture, just behind the photographer). Emergency vehicles may need to use this as access
to the rear of the school building at any time.
We wish you a pleasant stay at our New Forest
holiday cottage in Lyndhurst!

"The Old Stables is a lovely space and we all had a fantastic weekend.
As a group we will certainly be using Halcyon Holiday Cottages again
in the future.
