New Forest Cycle Route

What follows is a description of a cycle route which would be suitable for all abilities. The whole family should be able to cycle this route in the New Forest without too much difficulty! This route has been provided by Ross at Cycle Experience in Brockenhurst . Since starting off in life from a dilapidated stable building as New Forest Cycle Hire Centre on May 1st 1993, Cyclexperience Ltd now offers 3 retail shops with 400 bikes to choose from and the biggest one-stop Cycle Hire shop in the New Forest with almost 200 models available from the Cycle Hire Depot at nearby Brockenhurst Rail Station.

Leave Cycle Experience and pick up Mill Lane (south of the level crossing). Continue for about 3/4 mile until meeting T-junction. Turn LEFT into lane, passing under railway bridge. Continue past houses (on your left) until reaching sharp left bend with gravel track on the RIGHT. Turn RIGHT onto the long straight gravel track.

Follow track for about 1/4 mile until it forks and keep LEFT, towards Parking Area. Proceed into woods through gate at edge of forest (after 'standing hat' sign. Take LEFT fork after gate and continue along this track (around bends) until reaching a T-junction after coming down hill. Turn RIGHT (the more worn route) and after 200 yards, you will meet another T-junction.
IF YOU WANT TO RETURN, REFER TO THE ESCAPE DIRECTIONS AT BOTTOM OF MAP, OTHERWISE...Turn LEFT and cycle for a short way until meeting another junction. Keep LEFT and continue for about 1/4 mile until passing through gate. TURN LEFT FOR PUB (see bottom of page) or turn RIGHT to continue route.** Continue until reaching T-junction in a clearing and turn RIGHT, through gate. After about 200 yards, turn LEFT into first junction and continue down hill until meeting another LEFT junction. Turn LEFT again and follow track until reaching a T-junction at the end.
Turn LEFT at junction, cycle up and over hill until reaching the tarmac road. Turn RIGHT onto tarmac and continue until reaching a gravel track. Proceed down hill with Denny Lodge on your RIGHT. At bottom of hill, continue through gate and into forest inclosure. Cycle along track (ignoring left and right turn) until reaching a track crossing before the railway bridge.
Turn RIGHT at crossing and proceed OVER another crossing until you pass through a gate and emerge at 'Standing Hat' parking area from avenue between the trees.
Cycle back to where the gravel track meets the lane. Turn LEFT into lane and follow route back to CYCLE EXPERIENCE via Mill lane (the way you came out).

ESCAPE DIRECTIONS

Turn RIGHT, follow track down hill, around left-bend until reaching a right-turn over a stream tributary. Turn RIGHT and follow track until reaching a track crossroads. Turn LEFT and continue until meeting a T-junction. Turn RIGHT at junction and continue until reaching a track crossing immediately before railway bridge. Refer to Paragraph 5. to finish route.

REFRESHMENT DIRECTIONS

Follow track until reaching edge of forest inclosure at Clayhill. Proceed through gate and continue towards A337 road. Turn LEFT for Crown Stirrup pub. Lyndhurst is to the right. Follow track back into forest to rejoin route at** in paragraph 3.
