Lewis House is located at the south west corner of the New Forest, just a mile from the beautiful beaches at Highcliffe and only half a mile from the New Forest National park itself. Chewton common is close by, as is the wonderful spa, restaurant and small golf course at the well known Chewton Glen Hotel. As well as the forest and the beaches virtually on your doorstep, Christchurch and Bournemouth are just a short direct drive from this large New Forest Cottage.
Lewis House owes its name to its architect, John Lewis, who designed the contemporary house which was completed in 2008. Although the house is brand new, it is in a street of older houses, set on an individual plot which was allocated when the road was set out in Edwardian times, that was never built on, just used as a large garden for the neighbouring house. The contemporary design is reflected throughout the interiors, with large open plan spaces, tall vaulted ceilings with glazed gable and french windows to the garden, contemporary open fireplace and reclaimed timber floorboards throughout.
Walkford is a small village, with a couple of pubs within a few hundred yards in either direction, and a good convenience store at the end of the road. Highcliffe is within easy walking distance, where you’ll find a good selection of restaurants, including in particular an excellent Thai restaurant run by a husband and wife chef and waitress team. It is small though – so be careful to book especially if it is for a large group. There is a top quality chinese takeaway next door to the Thai restaurant too, and several other places to eat, as well as a handful of pubs, tea rooms, coffee shops, supermarket, antique shops and a kayak and surf shop. Just beyond the main street you’ll come to the cliff top and sandy beach, where there’s a quality cafe/bar/ restaurant open in the daytime and evening with fantastic views.
This large cottage is the perfect base to discover the south west New Forest or venture further along the Dorset coast for a day.
The kitchen/dining/living space has plenty of space for the whole group to dine together in the same room. Theres a cosy fireplace for winter and the french windows accessing the large deck and garden are wonderful when the weather turns warmer.
This large space is divided into three distinct zones. At the end of the room is the lounge, with the beautiful glazed gable extending into the vaulted ‘gull wing’ floating roof, and a central contemporary fireplace, with settees and armchairs for everyone to relax in comfort. There’s a television with DVD, and plenty of bookshelves. The dining area has a large table for your meals and high level glazing, and is adjacent but open plan to the kitchen, which has fitted units with silestone granite worksurfaces all round and plenty of deep drawers providing storage. There is a wide range cooker with a single very large oven, a large built-in stainless steel fridge freezer and integrated dishwasher. The base and wall units house all the cooking and dining equipment needed for your break. The washing machine is in the utility room. The kitchen and dining arrangement here makes Lewis House a wonderful large cottage for adding a chef-catered meal for a special evening in, with no washing up to do, no tables to set, or taxis to arrange home, as you’re already there!
There are two bath / shower rooms, one ensuite, Both are very modern, the bathroom has a double ended bath with a shower over, the shower room has a large double sized shower. There’s a separate large cloakroom with wc and basin on the ground floor too and all have heated towel rails.
There are five bedrooms at this large cottage, and a double sofabed in the lounge too. All are double rooms, which can of course be used as singles too, and single beds can be put in one room as required. The contemporary layout and design, ‘board room’ sized table, catering option, together with the ability to have a separate bedroom for each person makes this large cottage particularly popular with corporate clients for business events and meetings with privacy and seclusion that a hotel does not offer.
